The Conjugate Method now in Kuala Lumpur: A Journey Through Time and Training

Updated: Jul 2

The first time I heard about the conjugate training methodology was from the world-renowned coach Joe DeFranco. He discussed it on a podcast just before releasing his popular "Westside for Skinny Bastards 3.5" program. To be honest, I’ve never been a typical 'one-rep-max-guy', even though deep down, I knew I needed to improve my absolute strength. When you’re writing your own workout program, it’s easy to stick with what you’re comfortable with and avoid things you’re not 100% familiar with or that make you feel like a beginner. That’s a kind of personal trainer bias. That’s why I often prefer to follow other coaches’ workout programs. It helps me stay open-minded about training, learn new techniques, and continuously improve the workout programs I create for my clients.

This curiosity and willingness to learn led me to the conjugate training method. I now use it with my clients in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, and with my online personal training clients. Let me give you a bit more information about it, and I hope I can open your mind to its value. Let’s dive in!

The Seeds of Strength: 1960s-1970s

Our journey begins in the austere training halls of the Soviet Union. During the 1960s and 1970s, Soviet weightlifters were dominating the international stage, their success rooted in a unique blend of maximal effort, dynamic effort, and repetition effort. These athletes weren't just lifting weights; they were redefining what the human body could achieve. Concurrently, across the globe, Bulgarian lifters under Ivan Abadjiev were pushing the envelope with their high-frequency, maximal effort lifting. These two powerhouses of strength set the stage for what would become the Conjugate Method.

The Alchemist of Strength: Louie Simmons and Westside Barbell

Fast forward to the 1980s in Columbus, Ohio, where a powerlifter named Louie Simmons was experimenting with these Eastern Bloc techniques. Simmons, a student of strength science, combined Soviet and Bulgarian principles, creating a hybrid approach that would come to be known as the Conjugate Method. Westside Barbell, his brainchild, became a laboratory for strength, producing champions who shattered records and changed the game.

The Trifecta of Training: Maximal, Dynamic, Repetition

What makes the Conjugate Method so effective? It’s all about variety and balance. Here's a breakdown:

  • Maximal Effort: This involves lifting near-maximal loads to build pure, unadulterated strength. Think of it as pushing your boundaries to discover what you’re truly capable of.

  • Dynamic Effort: Here, the focus is on lifting submaximal loads with explosive speed. It’s not just about lifting heavy but lifting fast, developing the kind of power that translates to real-world athleticism.

  • Repetition Effort: This is where muscle hypertrophy and endurance come into play. Performing multiple repetitions helps build size and stamina, essential components of a well-rounded strength athlete.

Evolution and Adaptation: 1990s to Present

By the 1990s, the Conjugate Method had cemented its place in powerlifting lore. But it didn’t stop there. Coaches and athletes across various sports began adapting its principles, recognizing its potential to enhance overall athletic performance. From CrossFit gyms to football training camps, the Conjugate Method’s influence spread far and wide.
